The quest for the killers of the Doom Patrol continues in NTT #14. You will remember that the last panels of the last issue implied that Mento was now working with Madame Rogue and this cover seems to confirm it, but we'll get to that later. The comic opens with the Cyborg, Robin, and Kid Flash awaiting the arrival of the rest of the team.
God do I miss old fashioned comics. They always wanted to make sure you knew what was going on. So we get a couple of pages of emotional connections, reinforcing the idea that Wonder Girl is troubled, Starfire digs Robin, Cyborg and Beast Boy are buddies, and that Raven and Kid Flash have a complicated relationship.
Then the action starts. The near catatonic Dayton freaks out demands his Mento costume, so Beast Boy ever the diplomat reminds him Mento was lame.
Almost magically Dayton's Mento costume is produced by Kid Flash and then Starfire decides to slam Mento too.
Starfire babe you're talking to a grown man in pixie boots and shorts.
Tired of all the insults Mento strikes back. And chaos ensues!
Well really he was under Madame Rouge's control but never mind. After kicking a little Titan ass he's subdued by Raven. This leads to a little conflict between Zahl and Rouge, I'll give Wolfman this he really knows how to keep the subplots interesting.
It's then we're introduced to perhaps the most tragic figure in comics history, Henri Duchamp. Monsieur Duchamp is described as Madame Rouges most loyal sycophants. Unfortunately, he only survives four panels.
Alas poor Henri...
Then we get the real good stuff. A three page history of the doom patrol.
Whoa! This is an all ages book buddy.
BB charges off to confront Rouge and Zahl only to have the area struck by an earthquake. And then we get some awesome and a Star Wars reference.
That's right in 1981 John Dykstra was that kind of celebrity.
Rouge uses her flying city to attack the nation of Zandia which she plans to take over. The Titans who have followed in the Titans jet leap to the defense of Zandia but are taken down one by one. Then on the last page the real villains are revealed!
The freakin' Brotherhood of Evil. Now that was good. Note that Marv invents a new word, "oboy."
And now the letters page.
So how does it hold up? Quite frankly #14 seems a bit more dated than number #13 but it makes up for it with good plotting and more Doom Patrol.
Next time...???
