Halloween Special: Hellblazer #50

Way back when it was announced the John Constantine was getting his own series, I was sure it would be crap.  John Constantine in the Swamp Thing was so cool he could barely be contained on the comic page.  So when Hellblazer came out and it wasn't total crap, I was thrilled.  So for Halloween why not celebrate one of John's spookier confrontations, the one with the King of the Vampires.

The story begins with John enjoying a three day shagging marathon with his lady.  He gets out of bed to find a message written in blood on the bathroom mirror.

John goes to Hampsted Heath where a ghoul leads him to his host.

None other than the King of the Vampires wants to have a little talk with John.  One of the cool things about this issue is that inter-spaced with the story are single pages vignettes of the John and the Vampires history.

The first victim of the King of the Vampires?  The first man.

John's unpleasantness at Newcastle.

The Vampire ask John what he thinks of his fellow magic users.  John doesn't mince words.

I especially love his impression of Jason Blood.

John breaks down and the Vampire King makes him an offer.  Become his spy.

Nice call back to the time John was dying of cancer, sold his soul three times so that three lords of hell would go to war if he died. John decides he's not going to die tonight and starts trying to come up with a plan.

The Vampire King sells the pleasure of the power he could offer.

John replies that if he's hungry he can go eat shit.  The Vampire is not amused.

John then goes to tell the Vampire why his life is better than the one the Vampire offers.

This does not go over well with the Vampire who honors his word but swears revenge on Constantine.

Having escaped death again, John decides the thing to do is go back to shagging.

Not the strongest Constantine story but not the worst.  The art is moody but a little muddied for my taste.  But it's funny how the mind works, I could have sworn the thing about the first victim of the Vampire King was from Neil Gaimen story.

Next time:???
