So last time Kulan Gath had cast a spell that turned Manhattan into a kind of sword and sorcery version of itself. The only ones not effected by the spell were Spider-Man, the Black Queen Selene, and Warlock. Spider-Man had been captured by the New Mutants who were under the thrall of Kulan Gath. Now we learn what happened to him.
We then get a bit of Claremontian reader feeder to catch everyone up on what happened last time.
Kulan Gath is getting his kicks torturing Spider-Man, who can't stop with the jokes.
Peter don't ever change. In the meantime Gath gloats over an imprisoned Selene but is upset that his foot soldiers didn't bring in the rest of his enemies.
The Avengers, remaining X-men, and New Mutants go to the New York Public Library which is now a temple in search of allies. But they're too late, all the priestesses have been slaughtered by Gath's forces who ambush the good guys.
During the fight Rogue get's turned human and quickly finds herself with a knife in the back.
Storm seeing Rogue killed goes crazy which gives the good guys a chance to escape. Just when it looks like Storm will be overwhelmed, Warlock rescues her.
Starfox and Wasp are captured, Wolfsbane, Cannonball, and Rogue are killed. Body count 3.
Warlock then tries to communicate with Storm, Colossus defends Amara from his sisters complaint that she didn't help during the battle, Kulan Gath transforms the Wasp into a Harpy and Starfox into an even more handsome and douchier version of himself, and the Avengers come up with a new plan.
The Avengers bluff there way into Gath's palace but are quickly attacked. Luckily Illyana's soulsword dispels Gath's control but it comes too late for Sunder. Body count 4.
The rest of Gath's trap is sprung.
The Vision phases and resolidifies inside of Colossus which results in an explosion.
The Scarlet Witch turns Nightcrawler, Callisto, Majik and a priestess to stone. Body count 8.
Peter summons the last of his strength to try and tell them that Gath's amulet is the key to his power. But no one except Warlock can understand him.
After all he been through Peter finally dies. Body count 9.
Warlock and Storm make a last ditch play for the amulet and have victory within their grasp when....
The amulet goes to Amara while Selene bursts into flames. Then Storm and Warlock are fatally wounded by a volcano opening beneath their feet.
Psyche, the reason Selene had been so easily captured by Gath was she had switched appearances with Amara.
Warlock dying infects Storm with the technovirus which creates Techno-Storm, who promptly infects Selene and drains her life force. Body count 10.
But now there's a problem, Dr. Strange explains Gath's spell has taken on a life of its own and cannot be undone.
So he uses Majik's time space powers to turn back time so that Gath's spell was never cast. Thus no one ever died. Nothing could possibly go wrong with creating such a paradox could it..
Epilogue...
Yep, Strange's solution made it possible for Nimrod to jump from Rachel's timeline to the main timeline.
So how does it hold up? I would say pretty darn good. It's a good story, great art, and introduces a new character that will become big in future X-Men books.
Bonus... Go Bots.
