So I got tired of writing about things like AT&T v. Concepcion and decided to get back to writing about comics.
Back in the late 80s Marvel decided that what it needed was a new team of young heroes and thus the New Warriors were born. Unlike say the Teen Titans the Warriors weren't established heroes sidekicks. What I liked about the Warriors was that it featured Firestar. Firestar had been created for the Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends, one of my favorite Saturday morning cartoons and eventualy she made the leap to comics. The New Warriors also featured Namorita, Speedball, Marvel Boy, Nova, and Night Thrasher. It really wasn't a bad comic by late 80s early 90s standards. Not my favorite but it was ok.
So on to Forever Yesterday. Now you'll have to forgive me but I'm going on my 20 year old memories. The Sphinx has changed the timeline and as a result Africa not Europe was the major colonial power and colonized the Western Hemisphere. As a result we have a topsy turvy world where among other things surprise, mutants are persecuted etc etc.
The issue begins with members of the Mutant Liberation Front, including members of the New Warriors led by Sebastian Shaw are about to break into Manhattan excuse me I mean Maqaman. You see everything now has a different name, for example America in now New Assyria, which doesn't really make sense but just go with it. It may be an alterate reality but Sam's mullet lives on. Also I'm not sure why the Juggernaut is in the MLF but hey whatever he was also in the X-Men.
To get onto the island they have to disable some kind of killer forcefield, which almost catches the Juggs.
Once through the field they're confronted by the Assyrian National Guard which are quickly dispatched. Meanwhile the Sphinx is telling the Avengers how they're going to have to get rid of this mutant problem. Which Captian Assyria doesn't seem completely onboard with.
In this timeline the Avengers consist of Horus, (Sceptre) Monica Rambeau, Storm, Captain Assyria, and Iron Man. So let's talk a minute about Iron Man.
Picking this comic up after 20 years when I got to Iron Man the first thing I noticed was, did they give Iron Man a hightop fade? I mean is that what's supposed to be going on there? Because that's what guys in armor do right, conform their helmet to whatever haircut they have currently. I then thought perhaps it was supposed to a stylized Egyptian headdress but after further consideration I'm back to the fade.
Meanwhile, Nova otherwise known as the token white Avenger is getting to low-down on the alterted timeline from Sayge, a character I have no memory of.
So it seems the original Sphinx's girlfriend has been reincarnated down through the years, retaining her memories so that she could stop Galactus from imprisoning the Sphinx in the time loop that he so famously did back in Fantastic Four #213. Needless to say she is successful resulting in the alternate timeline.
So it's up to Nova to put the timeline right and he better hurry because Magneto and Emma Frost are recruiting Namor for an invasion of the surface. So here's another question, why isn't Namor half-human here?
At Taylor Tower home of Dwayne Taylor aka Night Thrasher, Reed Richards is having a meeting with Dwayne's dad who is sympathetic to the rebels. And wouldn't you know it, the authorities burst in and kill everyone in front of Dwayne making him swear revenge.
OMG: That's kind of like his origin in the 616 universe.
At the East Side power station the MLF battles the Avengers. When Nova shows up and attacks Marvel Boy his memories are partially restored and switches sides, causing Iron Man to be a jerk.
Nova then get's all Nova forcy and quickly dispatches the Avengers. The power generator comes down and the rebel forces attack. Which brings up a bunch of new questions.
There's the Human Torch, so is it the original or Johnny Storm. If it's Johnny Storm why doesn't Reed, Sue, and Franklin have powers. If it is the original how is the Vision get there? Is that Mastadon from DP7?
The Sphinx get's big and crazy. To be concluded!
Honestly this issue is hurt by missing the other two parts of the story, even then I think it might be a bit of a mess. There are some things that are confusing, things that make you scratch your head, and things that make you say WTF. It's an interesting idea but I don't know about the execution. So I'll give it two meh's.
Bonus: June 21 ROCKETEER
That's still one of the most beautiful movie posters I've ever seen.
